Meet Pact Collective, the new non-profit beauty recycling program

Caroline Del Col

Mia Davis, who’s part of our Clean Council, has just founded a brand-new nonprofit dedicated to reducing pollution in the environment by recycling beauty products. She talks about the exciting new initiative.

Who is Pact?

Pact is a nonprofit membership organization that sends "hard-to-recycle" beauty products to specialty recyclers to prevent the materials from becoming trash (which is what happens the majority of the time in our industry).  We are a collective of beauty industry stakeholders taking responsibility for the impacts of our packaging.

What inspired you to found Pact?

People are surprised to learn that many of the things they put into their curbside recycling bin are not actually recycled.  An estimated 120 billion beauty packages are made each year — most of them from virgin plastic, and most of them ending up in the landfill.

Tell us about how it works.

Pact has two take-back channels, both of which end up with our specialty sorting/recycling partners:

  1. In-Store Recycling Program, where we collect packages in a large bin in our retail partner’s locations (in the US, see Credo Beauty!), and ship when it's full, and
  2. By-Mail Recycling Program, where the end-user ships packaging to the sorting facility. This program in pilot mode — so stay tuned for more!

Pact's mission is to transform the way beauty packaging is designed and disposed of. We aim to tackle misinformation and greenwashing in the beauty industry. Pact will push for multi-stakeholder communication, and for transparency.

How can people support Pact and get involved?
