Meet Matt McLean of Uncle Matt's Organic

Caroline Del Col

Matt McLean, founder of Florida-based Uncle Matt's Organic, talks to us about how he got his start and what really goes into making delicious USDA Organic juice that’s free from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides and certified glyphosate residue-free.

What inspired you to get into the orange juice business and start Uncle Matt's Organic?

After graduating from the University of Florida with a degree in Business Administration, I went back to his hometown of Clermont, Florida and started a juice brokerage business in 1993. During the next several years, I learned valuable lessons about juice flavor and quality. My clients were located in the US and as far away as Europe and the Middle East. In 1995, a German customer inquired about importing organic juice. After researching the organic market, I discovered a passion for the organic way of life, while rediscovering my family’s philosophy of organic farming. Four years later, I launched Uncle Matt’s Organic with 100% not-from-concentrate organic orange juice!

How did you get your start?

In 1999, there weren’t that many organic beverages like there are today. With three acres in my dad’s backyard, we started growing nutrient-dense organic oranges and I worked to get retailer buy in. Little did I know that my childhood summers spent working in the groves would serve me well in starting and growing Uncle Matt’s. Over time, we have grown to be the national brand we are today.

Which obstacles did you face along the way — and how did you overcome them?

In agriculture there are many obstacles; whether it’s a hurricane, a freeze, or a pest, crops are always in danger of being wiped out in one season. Currently, citrus groves and most all varieties are being ravaged by a disease called citrus greening disease. There is no cure. We have partnered with other likeminded organic citrus growing families like ours in other places not as affected as Florida to maintain our supply chain. Competition and private label are always two factors that are present in the CPG space. Continuing to innovate and stay relevant to consumer needs and trends is paramount for continued success.

Why is it so important for juice to be USDA organic?

Less toxins to the environment and less toxic residues on the fruit are ultimately what is best for everybody. It really is the way my grandfather and great-grandfather used to grow citrus. Uncle Matt’s philosophy is based on building healthy soils that will yield a healthier tree so it can naturally defend itself against disease, not the single factor analysis of today’s Ag world where if you have a pest you find a pesticide!

What's the most important thing you learned in starting Uncle Matt's Organic?

There have been lots of important learnings along our 21 year journey, but having a passionate commitment for what you do always helps as you strive to overcome obstacles. For me, it’s easy to be passionate about what I do as I believe organic is a better way to eat, farm and live.

What's your favorite Uncle Matt's Organic product?

Currently, my favorite product is our brand new innovation: Uncle Matt’s Organic Ultimate Immune, with Elderberry, 300% Vitamin C, 50% Vitamin D and 25% Zinc. It’s a delicious trifecta of immune support.
